Apple's Mac OS X Security Patch Already Thwarted

Posted on June 1, 2011 at 2:42 PM Comments comments (0)

Poor little Apple…it would seem that the cracks in OS X’s mighty armor are starting to become apparent. For the hackers behind MAC Defender and it's many variants have declared war on the platform. A mere 8 hours after the release yesterday of the security fix from Apple, updated versions of the malware have surfaced that thwart Apple’s efforts to contain it.

These new variants are already out in the wild and in full force. While the patch will still protect you from older versions of the malware, Macs that become infected by these updated versions will be unprotected. That is until Apple provides updated definitions for the patch.

So…it’s probably a good idea to heed my warning from yesterday and grab yourself a decent Antivirus option and keep it updated. The Mac is under attack…and NO ONE is immune.

5 Must-Have iPad 2 Accessories

So you recently got a shiny new iPad 2 and want some accessories to go with it. You may have already seen my review of the Crazy on Digital Folio Case and Sleeve, but are you still left wanting more? If so, here is my list of 5 Must-Have Accessories for the iPad 2 based on accessories that I have personally used and enjoyed.

Apple's Digital AV Adapter

Now, if your like me, you bought the iPad 2 with the idea of a lot of on-the-go movie viewing in mind. So, what happens if your at a buddies house and you have a movie on your iPad 2 that the two of you want to watch together? Do you huddle around the iPad 2 on the couch? NO WAY!!! You grab one of these babies and connect your iPad to his flat screen TV and enjoy that movie on the big screen.

BookArc for iPad Stand

Now, if you plan on hooking this thing up to flat panel TVs all the time, your going to need a nice stand to keep it upright while you enjoy the movie viewing goodness. I mean, you can't risk scratching the backside of that new iPad by just laying it on the shelf right? So, your going to need a decent stand to prop this guy up. So, go for the best and grab yourself a BookArc for iPad. The guys at TwelveSouth have been making these for MacBooks for a while now and now they have an iPad-friendly version. All-in-all, this stand does what it was made to do and looks great doing it.

Apple TV (2nd Generation)

Now, before I get into this one, I have to address a few things. The first is that if you get this one, the Apple Digital AV Adapter is mostly useless, so choose between the AV Adapter and Apple TV wisely based on your needs. Secondly, I know a lot of you are asking, "How is this an iPad 2 Accessory?" I have two words for you...err...one in Apple-lingo...AirPlay. That's right...the Apple TV 2 in conjunction with an iPad 2 loaded with media makes your home entertainment center the ultimate media center. Using AirPlay, you can zip bits of media goodness from your iPad 2 over to your Apple TV 2, giving you control over the Apple TV that is unmatched by the Apple TV 2 and included Apple Remote alone. And for your iPhone and iPod Touch owners as well, this one works great for you all too.

In-Car Windshield/Dashboard Mount

While there may be a few uses for this for you iPad 2 WiFi owners, I am mainly recommending this one to the owners of the 3G version. Why is that you ask? Because that one includes built-in GPS as well. Why pay for a dedicated GPS Unit for your car when you have a GPS-Equipped iPad? Just get yourself a decent in-car mount and your off and going. And with so many options to choose from, your bound to find one that meets your functionality and aesthetic needs.

iPad 2 iCade

If your a retro gaming junkie like I am, you simply cannot pass up this one. the iCade adds a retro-arcade look to your new iPad 2, making gaming on the iPad feel a lot more like the glory days of the arcades.

These are just a few of my personal recommendations, but if your looking for something a little different than the above mentioned accessories, you can checkout some of the options offered on Apple's Online Store. Also, feel free to leave me a comment with your favorites below.

Apple Issues Security Patch for MAC Defender Malware

Posted on May 31, 2011 at 8:19 PM Comments comments (0)

It has been quite some time since the Mac malware known as MAC Defender was first discovered earlier this month and today Apple finally released a patch to combat it. The patch comes in the form of an OS X Security Update 2011-003 and can be applied through a standard "Software Update" or downloaded and installed manually from the "Apple Downloads" section of their site. For more details on this update, see the support knowledge base article HERE.

Now, this little situation shows us all that Macs are not invincible. With that said, lets all walk away from this with a lesson learned that even Macs should have an updated Antivirus App of some sort installed. Below are a couple of free solutions which I recommend, but there are many other free and paid solutions out there, so be sure to Google It and select the option that works best for your needs.
